Wood pergolas

A wood pergola kit almost always means pre-cut, pre-stained cedar with an open slat roof: that is ten of the fourteen kits here, from four brands. If you want wood and a roof that closes, Yardistry is the only brand that sells it, on two families. The wood-versus-metal argument is really an argument about roofs, because the metal kits are where the louvers are.

Backyard Discovery is most of this page. It sells seven cedar families and covers each for five years with the exclusions written out, which no other wood brand here matches. Amerlife undercuts it on price and publishes no warranty. Yardistry costs more and charges extra for assembly, staining and anchoring. Sunjoy sits at the bottom of the price ladder and is silent on warranty.

What a wood kit is, brand by brand

The four wood-frame brands and the roofs they sell (editorial summary; specifications are on each product page)

Yardistry’s 12×12 is the one kit whose wood is not named beyond "wood"; it is recorded as such and not assumed to be cedar.

Every kit on this page arrives as numbered lumber. Backyard Discovery, Yardistry and Amerlife all cut, drill and stain it before it ships, so the job is bolting, not carpentry. If you would rather supply the lumber yourself, bracket kits are the alternative. The differences are in what else is in the crate. Backyard Discovery puts a powered outlet hub and concrete anchors in nearly every box. Yardistry sells anchoring and staining as add-ons and prices assembly by the family. Amerlife lists nothing either way.

That is the buying rule for wood: read the inclusion list before the price, because the cheapest cedar kit can be the dearest by the time it is standing.

Wood with a roof that closes

  • Cedar posts and beams under grey aluminum louvers with a hand crank and a gutter. The only way to get wood and rain cover in one kit. One year on the lot, five on the lumber.

  • The same idea in a 13×11 room with a white aluminum louvered roof. Yardistry does not say whether the louvers are manual or motorized.

Both cost what an aluminum louvered kit costs, and the aluminum kit will need less looking after. Buy the Yardistry rooms because you want the timber, not to get a louvered roof cheaply; the louvered page has more choice and longer warranty terms.

Brand list prices, before tax, delivery and installation. Brands often run promotions, so check the live price before you order.

At the same footprint the entry aluminum louvered kits overlap the top of the cedar range. So the choice is rarely wood because it is cheaper. Choose wood because you want a structure that ages like the fence and the deck, and accept a fixed roof and a stain every few years as the price of that.

What to watch for

  • Four of the fourteen wood kits publish no warranty. Two of the brands do not publish one on any family.
  • Yardistry: anchoring, staining and assembly are each a paid add-on, and the Meridian ships without anchoring hardware. Backyard Discovery ships concealed concrete anchors on most families.
  • The two Backyard Discovery corner pergolas are triangular in use; their recorded 12.9×9.6 size is a bounding box.
  • Backyard Discovery’s warranty excludes colour fading. On a stained cedar kit that is the clause that matters.
  • The Sunjoy 10×11 canopy kit was out of stock when last verified.

Alternatives that are not pergolas

Sunjoy sells far more timber-framed structures as gazebos than as pergolas, and they are all below rather than in the grid above, because a gazebo is a different thing by construction. They run from 10×12 to 12×20 under fixed steel roofs, several with a skylight panel, and they are the only wood-framed kits here with a roof that keeps rain off without moving. Sunjoy calls the timber cedar throughout and names no species anywhere, which is why none of them reaches the cedar page.

Questions

Is a wood pergola cheaper than an aluminum one?

At the entry level, yes: the cheapest cedar kits cost less than any louvered aluminum kit. Like for like at 10×12, the dearer cedar kits overlap the cheapest aluminum louvered ones. The table above shows both at the same size.

Do wood pergola kits come pre-stained?

Backyard Discovery, Amerlife and Yardistry all ship pre-cut, pre-drilled and pre-stained lumber. Yardistry sells darker stains as a paid extra. Sunjoy does not say.

Which wood pergola has a louvered roof?

Two Yardistry families: the Meridian Wooden Louvered Pergola and the 13×11 Wood Room. Both put aluminum louvers on a cedar frame.
