Backyard Discovery is the cedar brand to start with: seven families, a five-year warranty with the exclusions written down, and anchors in most boxes. Amerlife is the cheaper cedar if a warranty does not matter to you, because it does not have one. Yardistry is the dearer cedar and the only one with a roof that closes. Sunjoy sells two cedar kits and says nothing about warranty on either.
Cedar kits are all the same idea: the lumber arrives cut, drilled and stained, and you bolt it together over a weekend. What separates them is the roof on top, the footprint on offer and how much of the job is in the crate. Read a cedar kit the way you would read a quote from a carpenter.

Brand list prices, before tax, delivery and installation. Brands often run promotions, so check the live price before you order. The corner pergolas are triangular in use; their per-square-foot figure divides by a bounding box and flatters nothing.
Backyard Discovery sells the widest cedar range and the plainest terms. Every family carries the same five-year cover, the exclusions name rust, fading and soft ground, and most kits ship with a powered outlet hub and concealed concrete anchors. The Beaumont is the one to start with: eight footprints from a 10×10 to a 24×12 and the lowest entry price of the range. Buy the Ashland or the Madison instead if the bar top is the point.
Amerlife’s Cedrix undercuts the Beaumont at every shared size and runs to 12×24. It publishes no warranty and lists nothing as included or excluded. That is a real saving with a real gap behind it, and only you know which matters more.
Yardistry is the premium cedar, and it earns that on the Meridian and the Wood Room, the only cedar kits with a louvered roof. On its open-slat Madison the premium buys a bar counter and a snap-on shade, and you still pay separately for anchoring, staining and assembly. Sunjoy’s two kits are the cheapest way into cedar with a privacy screen, and the only two here with no warranty and no size choice.
Three roofs you can put on cedar
- Open slats. Nine of the thirteen. Dappled shade, no rain cover, nothing to maintain but the stain. This is the cedar pergola most people picture.
- Fabric. The Brendan tensions a fixed shade sail inside the frame; the Sunjoy 10×11 has a canopy you adjust by hand and did not state whether it slides. Both give more shade than slats and no more rain cover.
- Aluminum louvers. Yardistry’s two rooms put a cranked louvered roof with a gutter on cedar posts. The only cedar that closes against rain, at louvered-aluminum prices.

Put those two lists side by side and the Yardistry premium looks different. Anchoring hardware is absent because "mounting surfaces vary", assembly is a separate line and the darker stains are a paid choice. Backyard Discovery’s exclusions are the power source for the outlet hub and the furniture in the photograph. Budget the Yardistry kit at its finished price before you compare.
What to watch for
- Three of the thirteen cedar kits publish no warranty: the Cedrix and both Sunjoy kits.
- Backyard Discovery excludes colour fading and improper installation on uneven or soft ground. Read that as a stain schedule and a level base.
- Yardistry does not supply anchoring hardware on the Madison or the Meridian and charges to anchor its other kits.
- The Verona and Tuscany corner pergolas do not state a mounting and the Verona is the one Backyard Discovery kit without the outlet hub.
- The Yardistry Wood Room does not say whether its louvers are manual or motorized.
