How the index is built
- Public kit prices only, read from the maker’s own site or a named retailer, and only where the page shows the price with a way to buy. Quote-only brands are listed, never estimated.
- Every price was captured in one window, Sep 24, 2026 to Sep 27, 2026, at US prices, and is traceable to a saved copy of the page.
- Price per square foot uses the maker’s nominal size. Each product family counts once: its own median first, then the median across families, so a brand with fifty sizes does not outweigh one with five.
- Prices were checked by dual independent extraction (two separate reads of every saved page) plus automated checks against the live product pages.
- A row from fewer than 5 companies or 8 families is shown with a “limited sample” label and its counts. Nothing is hidden.
- A type with fewer than 5 product families gets no median: its products are shown one by one.
- For covered roofs (hardtop and fabric), the product’s own name decides: named only a gazebo, it is left out; named both a pergola and a gazebo, it moves to a separate “sold as both” comparison. Louvered and open-slat pergolas count whatever the listing calls them.
- Within a product family, a price more than three times the next-smaller size is treated as a listing error and left out.
- Index level: Q4 2026 = 100 for every type. Later editions are measured against it.
- Three sellers include freight in the price; they are counted, and the methodology shows every median with and without them.

How much does a pergola kit cost per square foot?
It depends on the roof. The median price per square foot in Q4 2026 was $17.31 for a manual louvered kit, $57.55 for a motorized louvered kit, $33.61 for wood, $50.69 for vinyl and $3.52 for fabric. Each figure is the median across product families, from 8,494 prices at 73 companies.
How much does a 10×10 louvered pergola cost?
A typical 10×10 manual louvered pergola kit costs $1,599, and the middle half of kits costs $1,318–$2,349 (27 product families). A motorized 10×10 kit costs $7,990 ($4,999–$11,999, 17 families).
How much does a 12×12 pergola kit cost?
Typical 12×12 kit prices by type: louvered pergola, manual $2,814; louvered pergola, motorized $16,476; fabric canopy kits $400; premium shade systems (pergola sold with a retractable canopy) $9,409; wood pergola (open slat) $5,699; vinyl pergola $6,955. How much is a 12×16 vinyl pergola?
A typical 12×16 vinyl pergola kit costs $8,146. The middle half of kits costs $6,849–$9,990, from 27 product families at 6 companies.
Are motorized pergolas worth the price difference?
The index can't say whether the motor is worth it to you, but it shows the difference. Per square foot, motorized louvered kits cost a median $57.55 against $17.31 for manual ones, about 3.3 times as much. At 12×12 the typical kit is $16,476 motorized and $2,814 manual. The gap also reflects which brands sell motorized kits, not only the motor.
How much does a retractable canopy pergola cost?
Fabric pergolas are two markets. Canopy kits cost a median $3.30 per square foot, and a typical 10×10 kit costs $330. Premium shade systems, a complete pergola kit sold with the maker's own retractable canopy, cost a median $60.50 per square foot, with a typical 12×12 at $9,409. That second figure comes from 3 companies and 7 families, a limited sample.
Is a louvered pergola cheaper than a wood pergola?
Per square foot, yes, in every version of the count. A manual louvered kit costs 51% to 59% of the wood median, depending on which sellers are counted.
Are pergola kits cheaper on Amazon and Walmart?
The best-sellers cost less than brand-direct kits in the same size bands: fabric pergolas 26% less (9 best-sellers); hardtops sold as both pergola and gazebo 48% less (8 best-sellers); manual louvered kits 44% less (10 best-sellers). Wood pergola (open slat): too few size-matched listings to publish. Part of the gap is the product, not only the shop.
How often are pergola kits on sale?
It depends on the type. 63% of manual louvered prices showed a sale price below the regular price, against 3% of wood prices. The index uses the price you would have paid on the day.
