Metal pergolas
A metal pergola is one of three things, and the price tells you which: an all-steel frame under a fabric canopy or open slats at the entry end, a steel-post frame under aluminum louvers in the middle, or an all-aluminum louvered kit from there to the top. Steel is where the cheap kits are. Aluminum is where the roofs that close and the ten-year warranties are. Decide which of those you are buying before you compare a single price.
Eleven brands sell a metal-framed pergola kit. Only two of them, Backyard Discovery and Sunjoy, sell an all-steel one, and Sunjoy sells nothing else. Mirador and Erommy sell frames that mix the two. Everyone else is aluminum. That is the whole map of the category, and it is why a search for "metal pergola" turns up such a wide spread of prices.

A mixed frame is recorded with both materials in the order the manufacturer names them and never resolved to one.
Steel is heavier and cheaper, and every steel kit here is powder-coated galvanized stock. Backyard Discovery warrants its steel for five years and excludes rusting as a cosmetic defect, which tells you what to watch on a steel frame. Sunjoy publishes no warranty on any of its eight steel kits. Aluminum costs more per kit, and the brands that use it are the ones willing to warrant it for a decade.
The mixed frames are the interesting middle. Mirador puts steel posts under aluminum louvers on its S-series and says so in the spec table; the card on this site reads "Aluminum + steel". You get a louvered roof at a lower price and heavier posts to anchor. Read it as a fair trade, not a compromise.

The ladder has no gaps, which is the point: there is a metal pergola at every few hundred dollars from a Sunjoy canopy frame to a Hansø Apex. What changes as you climb is the roof first, the warranty second and the metal a distant third. The cheapest all-aluminum louvered kit costs less than the dearest all-steel one. So if you came here to choose a metal, stop, and choose a roof.
When steel is the right call
- You want a canopy pergola for a few hundred dollars and will replace the fabric in a few years. Sunjoy sells eight of them, all steel.
- You want open slats in black or white with a five-year term and no staining. The Backyard Discovery Stratford is the only metal open-slat kit on the site.
- You want a louvered roof and a warranty longer than a year without paying aluminum-brand prices. Backyard Discovery’s Sarasota, Ridgeline and Evanston are all-steel louvered kits with five years of cover.
Everything else on this page argues for aluminum. If none of those three describes you, the aluminum page is the shorter list.
What to watch for
- Eleven metal kits publish no warranty: every Sunjoy steel kit and three Purple Leaf canopy kits.
- Backyard Discovery excludes rust as cosmetic. On a steel frame that is the exclusion to read.
- Sunjoy’s Arcadia Adjustable Arched kit lists the concrete or wood anchoring screws as not included; the Stratford manual says the same about its permanent mounting hardware.
- The nine mixed frames appear on both the aluminum and steel pages by design. Their cards say so.
- Sunjoy publishes single sizes and single finishes on most kits; the size shown is the only one sold.
Alternatives that are not pergolas
The metal-framed structures below are not pergolas. Most are Sunjoy gazebos on steel or aluminum posts under a fixed two-tier roof, in sizes from 8×5 to 13×15; Mirador adds an aluminum offset-post gazebo, and Erommy a grill gazebo and a lean-to hardtop shelter, both louvered. They are listed here for the buyer who wanted a fixed roof and searched for metal.
Questions
Is a metal pergola aluminum or steel?
Either, and on this site the card says which. Most metal pergola kits are aluminum. All-steel kits come from Backyard Discovery and Sunjoy; Mirador and Erommy sell frames that combine steel posts with aluminum roofs.
Do metal pergolas rust?
Aluminum does not. The steel kits here are galvanized and powder-coated, and Backyard Discovery’s warranty excludes rusting as a cosmetic defect, which is the manufacturer’s own view of the risk. Sunjoy describes its frames as rust-resistant and publishes no warranty.
