Privacy policy

The Pergola Kit is a reference site. You can use every part of it without creating an account or telling us who you are. This policy describes what the site does and does not collect.

Information collected automatically

Like almost every website, the servers that deliver our pages may record standard technical information about each request: the address of the page requested, the referring page, the time of the request, your IP address and basic details about your browser and device. Search terms and filter selections form part of the page address, so they can appear in those records too.

These server logs are kept by our hosting provider to run and secure the service. We do not use them to identify individual visitors or to build profiles.

Information you provide

The site has no accounts, contact forms or comment features. The only personal detail you can give us is an email address, if you choose to subscribe to our newsletter (see below). Nothing else on the site asks for personal information.

Cookies and browser storage

We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used. It sets cookies in your browser to recognise a returning visit and to keep a single visit together as one session. We do not use advertising cookies, and we do not allow Google to use this data to build advertising audiences.

When you add products to the compare tray, the site remembers your selection using your browser’s local storage. That list stays on your device, is never sent to us, and is cleared when you remove the products or clear your browser data.

Our hosting provider may set a strictly technical cookie for security or traffic management. If it does, we do not read it or use it to identify you.

Analytics and third-party services

The site runs Google Analytics 4, supplied by Google. Apart from the Substack sign-up form described above, there is no embedded content from other sites, and there are no advertising networks and no tracking pixels. Fonts and images are served from the site itself.

Google Analytics records how pages are used, not who you are. On this site that means:

which pages you view, and the address of each one, including any search term or filter selection carried in it
how you arrived, such as a search engine, another website or a direct visit
general device and browser details, and an approximate location derived from your IP address
a small number of specific actions, so we can tell which parts of the site are useful: running a search, applying a filter, adding a product to the compare tray, choosing a size or finish, opening a manufacturer’s source document, and following a link out to a merchant

Your full IP address is not stored. Google signals is turned off, which means this data is never combined with Google’s advertising profiles or used to target advertising to you. Analytics data is deleted automatically after 14 months. We use it to decide what to publish and what to fix, and we do not attempt to identify individual visitors from it.

If you would rather not be counted, you can install Google’s browser opt-out add-on, turn on your browser’s “do not track” or tracking-protection setting, or block the script with a content blocker. Nothing on the site depends on analytics, so every page works normally either way.

Affiliate links and other websites

Product pages link to manufacturers and merchants. Following one of those links takes you to another company’s website, and that company’s privacy policy applies from that point on. We do not control what it collects.

Some merchant links are affiliate links. They may include a reference that tells the merchant you arrived from The Pergola Kit, and the merchant may set a cookie on its own site to attribute a later purchase. That cookie is set by the merchant, after you have left our site, and is not something we place or can read. Our affiliate disclosure explains the commercial side.

Where data is stored

Our product database and product images are held with Supabase, a hosted database and file storage provider. The information there describes pergolas, not visitors. Our server reads from it to build each page.

Analytics data is held by Google on its own infrastructure under its terms for Google Analytics. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share visitor data with advertisers.

Data retention

We retain information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose it was collected for, unless a longer period is required by law. For a site that collects nothing beyond technical server logs, that means those logs are kept for as long as the hosting provider needs them to run and secure the service.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal information an organisation holds about you and to have it corrected or deleted. Apart from a newsletter email address, the site does not ask you for personal information, has no accounts, and we do not build profiles of visitors. The analytics records described above are not tied to a name or an email address, so we hold nothing there that we could match to you. A newsletter address is held by Substack; you can remove it with the unsubscribe link in any email, and Substack’s privacy policy explains how to exercise other rights over it.

Children

The site is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Security

We use reasonable safeguards to protect the site and the data behind it. No method of transmission over the internet or of electronic storage can be guaranteed completely secure.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the site changes. When we do, the “Last updated” date at the top of this page will change. What the site does today is set out above; if we add features that collect more, this page will say so first.
