Retractable pergolas
Most retractable pergolas are a metal frame with a fabric canopy that slides back, and for most people Paragon’s soft-top kits are the ones to buy: they carry the longest written warranty of any canopy kit, three years on the frame, and the anchors come in the box. A canopy gives you shade and some rain cover, not a roof you can rely on in a storm. If you want a roof that keeps rain out and still opens, look at the two louvered roofs that fold away.
Canopy kits run from about $240 to $2,200, and Paragon’s Florence and Modena cost about $1,600 to $2,200. The two retracting louvered roofs cost about $3,500 and $15,000. Before you buy any canopy kit, check whether you can get a replacement canopy, because some brands don’t sell one.

Brand list prices, before tax, delivery and installation. Brands often run promotions, so check the live price before you order. Purple Leaf and Erommy also sell larger canopy kits, and Paragon’s California comes in 16-foot sizes. Every kit is in the list above.
The cheapest steel canopy kits are a season’s shade rather than a long-term structure: Sunjoy and Purple Leaf publish no warranty on any of theirs, and Erommy gives one year. Paragon costs several times more, but covers the frame for three years and the canopy for a shorter term, in writing.
Canopy or louvered: which retractable roof?
A fabric canopy is shade you can move. Pull it across on a sunny afternoon, slide it back in the evening, and take it in when the weather turns. Some are made of water-resistant fabric, but none has a gutter, so rain runs off the edge. Purple Leaf’s double-canopy kit adds a sloped second canopy on top as a rain guard, which helps but still isn’t a roof.
A louvered roof closes against rain like any louvered pergola, then folds or slides out of the way. Mirador’s 111A Origami folds by hand like an accordion and comes in one 13×10 size. BON’s Grand Retractable is motorized and spans up to 19 feet without a center post, at about four times the price. If you only want a roof that closes, a plain louvered pergola costs less.
Three things to check before you order
- The warranty, if there is one. Paragon covers its frames for three years, Erommy for one year from shipping, and Sunjoy and Purple Leaf publish none.
- Whether you can buy a new canopy. The fabric usually goes before the frame, which is why Paragon covers it for less time. Purple Leaf sells replacement canopies separately, while Sunjoy and Erommy don’t list any.
- What holds it down. Paragon includes anchor plates, but Sunjoy’s Arcadia leaves the anchoring screws out of the box. A canopy catches the wind, so bolt it down properly and pull the canopy back in strong wind.
Questions
Is a retractable pergola waterproof?
Not the fabric canopy kits. Some use water-resistant fabric, but none has a gutter, so rain runs off the edge. The two retracting louvered roofs, from Mirador and BON, close against rain like any louvered pergola.
What is the cheapest retractable pergola?
A steel canopy kit from Sunjoy, Erommy or Purple Leaf, from about $240 at its smallest size. None of them has more than a one-year warranty, so for a few years of use Paragon’s Florence, from about $1,600, is better value.
Does Costco sell a retractable pergola?
Yes. On 11 October 2026 Costco listed Paragon’s Modena, the soft-top kit we recommend, online at $1,499.99 to $2,499.99 depending on size, with more than 900 member reviews.
Can a retractable pergola be motorized?
Only BON’s Grand Retractable here, whose louvered panels slide back on a motor. Every fabric canopy kit is pulled by hand.
What is the difference between a retractable and a louvered pergola?
A louvered pergola has slats that tilt open and closed, but the roof stays in place. A retractable pergola’s roof slides or folds right off the frame, leaving it open to the sky. Most retractable kits use fabric, which is cheaper but doesn’t keep rain out the way closed louvers do.
