Aluminum or steel?
Aluminum doesn’t rust and is light enough to carry across a lawn, so a scratch during assembly is just a mark. Buy it near the coast, on a deck or anywhere you don’t want to think about paint. The aluminum gazebo page compares the aluminum-frame kits on price, warranty and rust.
Galvanized steel is stronger and heavier, which is why all-steel kits carry the heaviest roof-load ratings. Its weakness is the coating: where it chips, rust starts, and Sunjoy’s warranty doesn’t cover rust at a scratch. Keep a paint pen in the garage and touch up chips as you find them.
Four things to check before you order
Something to bolt to. A steel roof on four posts catches the wind like a sail, and the wind ratings only count once it’s bolted to a slab or solid deck.
Where water sits. Owners of steel gazebos find rust first where water collects, at trim and joints. Check those spots after the first few storms.
Noise and heat. Rain is louder under a steel roof than under fabric, and the space underneath warms up on a sunny afternoon. A vented two-tier roof helps with the heat.
Helpers for the build. Owners report most of a day for a full-size kit, and the heavier steel ones need three or four people to lift the roof.
