Steel pergolas
Two different products are sold as a steel pergola. The all-steel kit, from Backyard Discovery or Sunjoy, is a canopy or open-slat frame at the cheap end, with one louvered range from Backyard Discovery in the middle (Purple Leaf vs Backyard Discovery compares it with another entry-price louvered kit). The steel-post kit, from Mirador or Erommy, puts aluminum louvers on galvanized posts and is a louvered pergola with a lower price and heavier legs. Buy Backyard Discovery if you want all-steel with a warranty. Buy Mirador if you want a louvered roof and do not mind the mix.
Steel is the budget metal, and this page shows why: nine of the twenty-two kits are Sunjoy canopy frames and Backyard Discovery slat and louver kits that cost less than any aluminum louvered pergola. It is also heavier and it can rust, and the one steel brand that publishes a warranty excludes rust from it.

The steel louvered kit to start with: six widths, a louver wand and gutters in the box, five years of cover. Skip it if you need more than ten feet of depth; every size is ten deep.
A gabled steel roof with four louvered sections that adjust independently, in three larger footprints. The dearest all-steel kit here, and the only one that looks like a roof from the street.
Open steel purlins in black or white, five years of cover, and the one kit whose manual says the permanent mounting hardware is not in the box.

A sliding-canopy frame at the bottom of the whole ladder. No warranty, one canopy fabric, and the 9×9 ships with anchor plates while the 12×14 ships with ground stakes.
Backyard Discovery is the all-steel brand with terms: five years on every kit, exclusions named, a powered outlet hub and steel anchoring plates in most boxes. Its louvered kits are the only way to get a closing roof on an all-steel frame, and the Evanston does it wall-mounted. The company excludes rusting as a cosmetic defect, so treat the powder coat as the thing you are looking after.
Sunjoy sells eight steel kits and every one is a fabric canopy on a powder-coated frame, most in one size and one colour. They are the cheapest pergolas on the site. Sunjoy publishes no warranty on any of them, and the Arcadia Adjustable Arched leaves the anchoring screws out of the box. Buy one as a season’s shade, not a structure; shading a pergola covers the other options.
Steel posts under an aluminum roof: Mirador and Erommy
The cheapest louvered pergola with a multi-year warranty on the site: steel posts, aluminum louvers, expansion bolts and a toolbox included, three years plus one. Buy the all-aluminum 111DA instead if you want double-layer louvers.

Mirador’s spec table reads "Aluminum + Alloy Steel", and the site records exactly that rather than picking one. In use the steel is the posts and the aluminum is the roof, which is the right way round: the heavy part carries the load and the light part moves. Erommy’s two mixed kits do the same with a canopy and with a louvered 12×20, both on one-year terms.
If you are here because aluminum louvered kits looked expensive, this is the group to compare. If you are here because you wanted steel for its own sake, the mixed frames give you steel where it counts and a roof that closes.

A steel louvered roof costs about four times a steel canopy at the same footprint. That is the whole reason to read this page rather than the aluminum one: below the louvered line, steel is the only metal on offer.
What to watch for
- Eight of the twenty-two steel kits publish no warranty: all eight are Sunjoy.
- Backyard Discovery excludes rusting and colour fading as cosmetic. Keep the coating intact.
- The Stratford and the Sunjoy Arcadia Adjustable Arched ship without the screws to anchor to concrete or wood.
- Backyard Discovery’s 18 and 20 foot louvered widths measure about eight inches short of their nominal size; the record notes it.
- Sunjoy describes some frames as "metal pergola" in the product title; the material row on this site is what the spec states.

Is a steel pergola better than aluminum?
It is cheaper and heavier. All-steel kits here are canopy, open-slat and Backyard Discovery louvered frames; aluminum carries the rest of the louvered market and the ten-year warranties. See aluminum pergolas for the comparison.
Will a steel pergola rust?
Every steel kit here is galvanized and powder-coated. Backyard Discovery’s warranty excludes rusting as a cosmetic defect; Sunjoy calls its frames rust-resistant and publishes no warranty. Neither promises it will not.
