12×14 gazebos

For most people, a 12×14 gazebo should be an aluminum-post steel hardtop like Sunjoy’s Kingston, about $1,400 with curtains and netting in the box. Spend about $1,000 more for a cedar kit from Backyard Discovery if you want 6×6 posts, outlets built into a post and a 100 mph rating once anchored. Either one fits a dining table for six, but check the permit first: 168 square feet is over the line in many towns.

A 12×14 roof covers 168 square feet, but the floor between the posts is closer to 100 to 128 square feet on the kits whose makers publish it.

The aluminum-post hardtops sit within a few hundred dollars of each other, so choose by what’s in the box: the Kingston, the Caesar and the Domi Classic come with curtains and netting, which saves $450 or more later. The step up to cedar buys thicker posts and a warmer look. Backyard Discovery adds outlets in a post and the strongest published wind rating at this size, but its netting is extra. Yardistry’s cedar 12×14s cost more again, and Costco’s 12×14 listings for them show out of stock, so buy direct from Yardistry for now.

How much space you really get

A 12×14 holds a dining table for six with room to walk around it, or a sofa group and a small table together, which a 10×10 can’t. But 12×14 is the roof, not the room. The posts stand inside the roof line, so the clear floor is closer to 12 by 10 feet on a Sunjoy Kingston and a little less on Yardistry’s thicker-post kits. Measure your furniture against that.

Aluminum or cedar posts?

Aluminum needs only a hose, weighs less to carry and leaves the most floor between the posts. Cedar looks warmer and the 6×6 posts feel more solid, but it needs restaining every year or two, and some owners report boards that arrive warped or split, so check them before you build. For more on each, see metal gazebos and wood gazebos.

Will it handle snow and wind?

Brands rate their gazebos in different ways, so the numbers don’t line up. Sunjoy rates the Kingston for 50 mph winds and 3,000 pounds of snow on the roof, and owners report it holding up through snow. Backyard Discovery rates its cedar 14×12s for 100 mph and about 9,000 pounds, but only once anchored as the manual describes. Sunjoy also says to take the curtains down in storms and heavy snow, and in snow country it pays to clear the roof after big storms rather than lean on any rating.

What it takes to put one up

You need a level slab or a solid deck at least as big as the base, and anchors to suit it. Some kits ship with anchors and some, like Yardistry’s, leave them out because surfaces vary. A cedar 14×12 from Backyard Discovery weighs about 780 to 920 pounds across several boxes, so plan help for the delivery.

Building one is a job for two people over a weekend: owners of the aluminum Kingston report about ten hours across two days, and cedar kits take longer. Backyard Discovery offers paid assembly for about $950, which is worth adding to the price before you compare.

Four things to check before you order

The permit. Many towns let you skip one for a structure under 120 square feet, and a 12×14 roof covers 168. Ask your building department before you order.

Your slab or deck. Measure it against the kit’s base, not the roof, and make sure you can bolt into it.

Curtains and netting. They’re in the box with the Kingston and several aluminum kits, and sold separately for the cedar kits from Backyard Discovery and Yardistry.

Every part, before you start. Damaged or missing parts are a common complaint, and replacements are easier to chase before the frame is half up.

Questions

How big is a 12×14 gazebo?

The roof covers 168 square feet, but the floor between the posts is about 12 by 10 feet on a Sunjoy Kingston and a little less on Yardistry’s kits. That fits a table for six, or a sofa group and a small table.

How much does a 12×14 gazebo cost?

About $1,100 to $1,600 for most aluminum-post steel hardtops, about $1,400 for Sunjoy’s cedar Kingston and $2,300 to $2,600 for Backyard Discovery’s cedar kits. Paid assembly adds about $950.

Do I need a permit for a 12×14 gazebo?

Probably. Many towns exempt structures under 120 square feet, and a 12×14 covers 168. Check with your building department before you order.

Is a 12×14 gazebo big enough for a hot tub?

Only a small one. Measure the tub against the space between the posts, about 12 by 10 feet at most, and leave room to step in and lift the cover. Sunjoy suggests 12×16 or larger for a hot tub.

Can a 12×14 gazebo go on a deck?

Yes, if the deck is solid enough to bolt into and at least as big as the base. The wind ratings assume the posts are bolted down as the manual describes.
