10×12 gazebos

For most patios, buy a steel-roof 10×12 with aluminum posts, like Sunjoy’s Kingston at about $1,100, with curtains and netting in the box. If you get heavy snow or strong wind, Backyard Discovery’s cedar Arlington or Barrington costs $1,999 and carries a five-year warranty, but comes with no curtains. Either way, a 10×12 takes a six-seat table, which a 10×10 can’t.

The 12 feet is the roof. The floor between the posts is a foot or two smaller each way, and it varies more than the price does.

Which one to buy

Sunjoy Kingston with aluminum posts

Best for: a first gazebo on a normal patio. At about $1,100 for the 12×10 it sits just under the $1,170 middle of the market, and curtains and netting come in the box, so there’s nothing else to buy except bolts for a slab. Sunjoy rates it for 50 mph winds and 3,000 pounds of snow on the whole roof. The catch: the warranty is one year, and rust where the roof paint gets chipped isn’t covered. Who should buy something else: anyone in real snow or wind country.

Backyard Discovery Arlington or Barrington

Best for: heavy snow or strong wind. Both are cedar under a steel roof, rated for 100 mph once anchored and about 30 inches of snow, with outlets built into a post and a five-year warranty. The catch: at $1,999 they cost about $900 more than the Kingston, Backyard Discovery sells netting separately and offers no curtains, and owners report builds of a long day or more. Why it isn’t first: on a sheltered patio you’d pay for ratings you won’t use. Who should buy something else: anyone who wants privacy curtains.

The middle of the market for a 10×12 hardtop is about $1,170, and the middle half of prices runs from $930 to $1,500. Paying more doesn’t buy more room at this size. Above about $1,200 you’re paying for cedar, built-in power, a longer warranty or a heavier rating.

Budget for what isn’t in the box: concrete anchors for most kits, netting for Backyard Discovery, and help with the build if you don’t have two or three friends for a day.

How much space you really get

A 10×12 roof covers 120 square feet: enough for a six-seat dining table, or a small sofa with two chairs and a coffee table, but not both. For a table and a lounge set together, look at a 12×16. Going down to a 10×10 saves little money and loses the six-seat table.

The posts stand inside the roof line, so the floor you can use is smaller, and thick cedar posts take the most. Measure your table and chairs against the space between the posts, not the size on the box.

Each maker’s published figures for the 10×12 size. Yardistry’s are measured inside to inside of the posts.

Aluminum, steel or cedar?

Under a steel roof, aluminum posts are the easy choice: they don’t rust, need only a hose, and the Kingston costs about $200 less than Sunjoy’s cedar-post version. Cedar looks warmer and the Backyard Discovery kits carry the heaviest ratings, but cedar needs restaining every year or two and the posts are thicker, so you lose some floor. If you’re unsure, see metal gazebos and wood gazebos.

What it takes to put one up

Plan on two or three people and a full day. Makers quote five or six hours for the aluminum kits, and owners of the cedar kits often report a long day or a whole weekend. Most low-star reviews are about the build rather than the weather: unclear instructions, missing or damaged parts, and slow replies from customer service, so check every box against the parts list before you start.

The wind ratings count only once the gazebo is bolted down: wedge anchors into a concrete slab, lag bolts into the joists of a deck. The bolts for concrete often aren’t included. Our hardtop gazebo page covers anchoring on each surface.

Four things to check before you order

The permit. Some towns exempt small freestanding structures only up to 100 square feet, and a 10×12 roof is 120. Ask your building department before you order.

Curtains. Sunjoy’s Kingston, Kozyard’s Alexander and Domi’s Classic include curtains and netting. Backyard Discovery sells netting separately and offers no curtains.

Snow. The snow figures are for the whole roof and assume you clear it. After a heavy storm, pull it off with a roof rake.

Deck or slab. A deck has to carry the gazebo and its anchors into the joists, so check where they run before you pick a spot.

Questions

Is a 10×12 gazebo big enough?

For a six-seat table or a small lounge set, yes. For a table and a sofa together, step up to a 12×16; for a long table or a hot tub, look at a 12×20.

How much does a 10×12 gazebo cost?

About $1,170 for a typical hardtop kit, with most between $930 and $1,500. Cedar kits with built-in power run about $2,000, plus anchors and any help with the build.

Can I put a 10×12 gazebo on a deck?

Yes, if the deck is solid and you bolt the posts into the joists rather than just the boards. Check the deck can carry the weight before you order.

Does a 10×12 gazebo need a permit?

Often, because at 120 square feet it is over the 100 square foot line some towns use. Check with your building department before you order.

How long does it take to put up a 10×12 gazebo?

A full day for two or three people on an aluminum kit. Cedar kits often take longer, so leave a second day.
