A half-ton delivery is just the start of this pergola project

The base first, then the help

The 14×12 manual recommends installing on a concrete surface or concrete post pads, and the kit comes with anchors for concrete. A wood deck requires separate mounting hardware, which isn't included, and enough structural support underneath; the manual says to confirm that before the pergola is fixed down. Preparing the surface the pergola will stand on, and supplying power to its built-in outlet and USB hub, are not part of the $4,299, and what groundwork, deck work and wiring add depends on the property. Whether a permit is needed depends on the local building department.

Some of the build is group work: several frame steps and two roof steps call for at least three people. Backyard Discovery sells the alternative as an optional $1,000 assembly service for the 14×12, though the product page doesn't say whether it covers any groundwork or how long it takes.

After it's up, the roof follows the weather

Backyard Discovery says the Ridgeline is rated for 100 mph winds and snow loads of up to 3,600 pounds on the 14×12, 4,200 on the 14×14 and 4,800 on the 16×14. Its pages name no test standard or testing body. Local codes generally state snow loads in pounds per square foot, so a total for the whole roof can't be checked directly against a local requirement.

The manual's own advice is to close the louvers in high winds and turn them fully open, upright, for snow or ice. The frame stays anchored, but the roof is something an owner resets as the weather changes.

The base matters to the warranty, too. Backyard Discovery's press release describes a five-year warranty on every component, but the terms sit in a general booklet for the company's outdoor patio items, not a Ridgeline-specific document. That booklet calls the warranty "null and void" if installation strays from the assembly instructions, and it excludes installation "on uneven, unlevel, or soft ground." A base that falls short of the manual's standard can put the coverage at risk.

Where the $4,299 stops

The $4,299 covers the delivered kit. The installation plan depends on the yard: an existing concrete patio still needs to meet the manual's requirements, lawn means preparing footings or a pad, and a deck calls for separate mounting hardware and adequate support.

The Pergola Kit drew on Backyard Discovery's product pages and Sept. 29 press release, the 14×12 manual and the company's general warranty booklet. The manuals for the 14×14 and 16×14 were not read, and nothing was built or tested.
