Pergola cost statistics for 2026: kit prices, installed cost, value and demand
A typical 12×12 pergola kit costs about $400 as a fabric canopy, $2,814 as a manual louvered roof and $5,699 in wood. A motorized louvered kit runs about $16,476. Those are kit prices before footings and installation (Pergola Price Index, Q4 2026, 6,871 pergola prices). The installed costs you see online mostly trace back to one Angi survey.
Updated Oct 9, 2026. Next update January 2027.
Pergola costs at a glance
- A motorized louvered kit costs about 3.3 times as much per square foot as a manual one (Pergola Price Index, Q4 2026). Kit prices.
- Amazon and Walmart best-sellers cost 26% to 48% less than brand-direct kits in the same size bands, although part of that gap is the product and not only the shop (Pergola Price Index, Q4 2026). Best-sellers.
- The installed cost quoted most often, $2,118 to $6,435 for about 100 square feet, comes from one Angi survey. Installed cost.
- A permit can cost a flat $50 in Irondequoit, New York, or $60 plus $5 per $1,000 of value in New Orleans, and Denver requires one for every pergola (city fee schedules, read 5 Oct 2026). Permits.
- New patios recover 95% of their cost at resale and new wood decks 89%, but the NAR and NALP report has no pergola line (2023 Remodeling Impact Report). Resale value.
- 35% of homeowners doing structure projects were adding shade structures in 2026, up 15 points from 2024 (2026 Houzz Outdoor Trends Study). Demand.
How much does a pergola kit cost?
The roof sets the price more than anything else. Fabric canopies cost least, manual louvered and wood sit in the middle, and vinyl and motorized louvered cost most. Here is what a typical 12×12 kit looks like.
Budget
$400
A fabric canopy kit. The cheapest way to get shade over a 12×12 space.
Mid-range
$2,814 to $5,699
A manual louvered roof ($2,814) or an open-slat wood kit ($5,699). You adjust the louvers by hand.
Premium
$6,955 to $16,476
A vinyl kit ($6,955) or a motorized louvered roof ($16,476). A motorized roof needs a power outlet nearby.
Watch out: these are kit prices, before tax, shipping, footings and installation. Treat them as the kit half of your budget. Source: Index, Q4 2026.
| Type | Typical per sq ft |

Fabric is two markets, so it is shown as canopy kits and premium shade systems and never as one blended median. The chart pools every fabric family, so its fabric bar sits a little above the canopy row. The hardtop pergola has no published median: the index found 3 companies and 3 products, at $5.41, $49.66, $60.72 per square foot. The method is on the methodology page.

How much does a pergola kit cost at common sizes?
Bigger kits cost more in total but less per square foot. A manual louvered roof is $1,599 at 10×10 and $2,814 at 12×12. Other sizes, and a lookup for any footprint, are on the index page.
| Type | 10×10 | 12×12 | 12×16 |

Premium shade systems cost $9,409 at 12×12 and $11,294 at 12×16.

Why do pergola kit prices vary so much?
Roof type matters more than size, but size counts too: the bigger the pergola, the less each square foot costs. A small wood kit of 100 square feet or less costs a median $52.41 a square foot, a wood kit over 300 square feet $29.22. Vinyl follows the same curve.
Sales add noise. About 63% of manual louvered prices were on sale when we captured them, against 3% of wood prices.
Watch out: if you are pricing a large pergola, do not multiply a small kit's per-foot price.

Amazon and Walmart best-sellers cost 26% to 48% less than brand-direct kits in the same size bands, although part of that gap is the product and not only the shop (Pergola Price Index, Q4 2026).

| Type | Best-sellers | Brand-direct families | Difference |

| Hardtop sold as both pergola and gazebo | 8 | 59 | 48% less |
| Louvered pergola, manual | 10 | 77 | 44% less |
The comparison is size for size, so a small best-seller is never set against a large kit.

Most online guides put a finished pergola at about $2,118 to $6,435, an average of $4,251, for about 100 square feet. Other publishers give other figures because they describe different projects.
| Publisher | Typical installed cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Angi | $4,251 average | About 100 sq ft; range $2,118 to $6,435 |
| Fixr | About $4,500 | Standard cedar structure |
| Forbes Home | About $5,000 | Range $2,400 to $8,960 |
| The Home Depot | $7,539 average | Custom wood, 12×12 Deluxe |
| Angi, motorized | About $13,680 for a 12×12 | Motorized pergola |

Why do so many sites quote the same pergola cost?
Because most of them are repeating one Angi survey. Angi published $2,118 to $6,435 with a $4,251 average. Other sites show the same range rounded to $2,100 to $6,400 with an average near $4,200, mostly without a source. The repeats are one survey counted several times.
Watch out: check the date and the method before you quote a pergola cost. If a page gives no method, treat it as a copy. For your own project, price the pieces: the pergola cost guide takes them one at a time.

What do permits, footings and electrical add?
Permit rules depend on your city. Denver requires a permit for every pergola, while Seattle usually exempts open-framed structures up to 120 square feet. The model building code exempts detached one-story accessory structures of 200 square feet or less, but each city adopts it differently.
Fees vary too: a flat $50 in Irondequoit, New York, or $60 plus $5 per $1,000 of value in New Orleans.
A concrete slab runs about $600 per 100 square feet, and a new outdoor outlet for a motorized pergola $150 to $260. Both are secondary estimates.
Watch out: ask your city before you order.

Does a pergola add value to a house?
No study with a published method isolates a pergola's resale return. The closest data covers patios and wood decks, which recover 95% and 89% of their cost.
Watch out: figures such as a "50% to 80% return" circulate on contractor blogs with no study behind them. None was found, so none is quoted here.

The NAR and NALP report covers 11 outdoor projects and is based on 1,891 NAR member responses (February 2023) and a 160-response NALP cost survey (January 2023). It has no pergola, arbor or gazebo line. Zonda covers 28 projects in 119 local markets and names no pergola or covered-structure project in its release.
How popular are pergolas, and how big is the market?
35% of homeowners doing structure projects were adding shade structures in 2026, up 15 points from 2024, according to the 2026 Houzz Outdoor Trends Study. That is a share of homeowners already doing structure projects, and shade structures are not only pergolas.
Market-size estimates are far apart. Four market-research publishers put the global pergola market between $1.57 billion and $4.74 billion for 2024 to 2026, and none gives a US figure you can lean on.
Watch out: the often-quoted "51% of landscape architects expect pergolas to be popular" comes from a 2016 survey. It records what professionals expected, not what homeowners built.
