10×20 gazebos

A 10×20 gazebo is a long, narrow 200 square feet, and the freestanding hardtop kits sold at this size cost about $1,800 to $2,800. None stands out from the rest, so choose by what comes in the box, how the 20-foot roof is held up and what you can bolt it to. If your yard can take 12 feet of width, a 12×20 has far more kits to choose from.

At 10×20 the word gazebo covers three different things: a freestanding hardtop, a lean-to that bolts to your house wall, and a pop-up tent. The kits below are the freestanding ones, and the 20-foot length is where they differ most.

Which kind of 10×20 to buy

A freestanding hardtop stands on its own posts and can go in the middle of a yard or on a slab. These are the kits on this page, and they cost the most because they carry their own frame on all sides. A wall-mounted lean-to rests one long side on your house, which saves posts and money but needs a wall that can hold the roof. See wall-mounted gazebos. A pop-up canopy tent is temporary fabric on a folding frame, sold at this size for a few hundred dollars, and it isn’t built to stay up through a winter.

Between a lean-to and a freestanding kit, the question is whether you have a wall to use. If you want a louvered roof you can open and close, a louvered pergola comes in this size too.

The two wood kits are the least expensive hardtops, and neither lists curtains or netting, so add those if you want bug protection. The aluminum kits cost more and include both. Domi’s soft-top canopy is about $500, but the maker says its fabric roof is not completely waterproof, so it’s a shade structure, not a roof for rain.

Several of these are also sold through big retailers, sometimes for less than the maker charges, so compare before you order. Then budget for what isn’t in the box: a base to bolt to, anchors for it, and help with the build.

What fits under 200 square feet

A 10×20 roof is the same area as two 10×10s end to end, which is how to picture it: a dining table in one half and a seating group in the other, or a long bar and grill line down one side. The posts stand inside the roof line, so the floor you can use is a little smaller each way. Where makers publish it, the footprint of the posts is about 9 by 18½ feet.

Nobody we found publishes the width between the posts or the height under the beams, so measure your furniture against the post footprint, not the roof.

Veikous Cedar Hardtop Grill19 ft 11¾ in × 10 ft 1⅝ inNot published8 ft 6 in

Each maker’s published figures for the 10×20 size. One aluminum kit lists a slightly larger post footprint, 18 ft 10 in × 9 ft 2 in. Heights are overall, not the clear space under the beams.

Can a 10×20 gazebo shelter a car? Amerlife and Veikous both say theirs can double as a carport, but neither publishes the clearance under the roof. Amerlife’s overall height is a little over 7 feet, which leaves less than that under the beams, so there’s little headroom for a tall vehicle. For a gazebo that’s sold as a carport, look at the 12×20 gazebos.

Does a 20-foot roof need a middle post?

A roof that spans 20 feet carries its weight, and any snow on it, across a long beam, so a middle pair of posts matters more here than at 10×12. Most of the aluminum kits in the table list six posts, a pair in the middle. Veikous’s own picture of its 10×20 shows the same layout. Amerlife publishes no post count, and some owners of its gazebos in other sizes report the long beams sagging in the middle.

Check the post count and how the middle of each long side is supported before you buy, and keep the beam straight as you assemble it.

Wind, snow and the base

Published ratings are thin at this size. The aluminum kits list a snow load of 2,500 pounds with no conditions and no wind rating. Amerlife and Veikous give no snow or wind figure at all, and Domi’s fabric canopy lists 30 mph. A long roof catches a lot of wind, so how it’s fixed down matters more than any number.

Every maker says to anchor the gazebo as soon as it’s up. Veikous includes ground stakes and mentions ground bolts for concrete, and Domi says its kits can be bolted to a wooden deck or a concrete floor. On a deck, fasten into the joists, with blocking where a post falls between them: one owner of an aluminum kit found that deck boards alone wouldn’t hold. None of the maker pages we read mentions pavers, so ask before you set one on them.

What it takes to put one up

Amerlife says to plan on three people and 8 to 11 hours, Veikous ships in six boxes, and the aluminum kits want two or three people and a ladder. Owners of 10×20 kits describe a long day with a crew at best and a few days at worst. Most complaints are about the build and the seller, not the weather: unclear instructions, missing or damaged parts, bowed or cracked boards on the wood kits, and slow replies from support. Check every box against the parts list the day it arrives, while a replacement is still easy.

On Trustpilot, Veikous holds 3.1 from 76 reviews and Amerlife 2.0 from 25, with customer service and refunds the most common complaints in both.

Four things to check before you order

The permit. Many towns exempt a small freestanding structure only up to 120 square feet, and a 10×20 is 200. Ask your building department and your HOA, or see our permit guide.

The return terms. Veikous refunds within 30 days but you pay the freight back, Amerlife charges 20% when you return it for a reason other than a defect and won’t take back a gazebo that has been assembled, and Domi charges 20% once its boxes are open. Read the terms before you start building.

The warranty. Amerlife covers a year, Veikous six months and Domi a year on the canopy, and Domi’s excludes weather damage.

Your surface. Slab, deck or pavers each need a different fix, and the whole 200 square feet needs to be level.

Questions

How big is a 10×20 gazebo?

The roof covers 200 square feet, about 20 feet long and 10 wide. The posts stand inside it, so the floor you can use is closer to 18½ by 9 feet.

How much does a 10×20 gazebo cost?

Freestanding hardtop kits cost about $1,800 to $2,800, plus a base and anchors. A fabric-roof gazebo is about $500, and lean-tos that mount to a wall usually cost less than freestanding kits.

Does a 10×20 gazebo need a permit?

Often, because at 200 square feet it is well over the 120 square foot line many towns use. Check with your building department and your HOA before you order.

Does a 10×20 gazebo come with curtains and netting?

The aluminum kits in the table include both. The two wood kits list neither, so budget for netting if you want it.

Is a 10×20 gazebo the same as a 10×20 canopy?

No. A canopy is a temporary fabric roof on a folding frame. A hardtop gazebo has a steel or aluminum roof, posts you bolt down and a base, and it’s meant to stay up all year.

Can I put a 10×20 gazebo on a deck?

Yes, if the deck is strong enough and you fasten the posts into the joists, not just the boards. A wooden deck needs blocking where a post falls between joists.
