Toja Grid vs Bjorn vs Zen: which pergola bracket kit should you buy?
Toja Grid, Bjorn Woodworks and Zen Pergolas sell steel brackets, not pergolas. Pick Toja for shapes and a roof load document, Bjorn for the longest warranty, or Zen to order everything on one form. You buy the lumber and usually the anchors.

A bracket kit is not a pergola price
You are buying steel connectors. The posts, beams, anchors and any roof come from a lumberyard and a hardware store, and the build is yours. The bracket price is only part of the finished cost, so it cannot be set against a boxed aluminum kit.
On top of the brackets, budget for these:
- Posts and beams. None of the three puts lumber in the box.
- Anchors. Toja and Zen leave them out, and Bjorn’s pages disagree (see the Watch out below).
- Screws or bolts. Each kit includes some. Toja sells extras separately.
- Roof or shade. Toja sells shade sails and other tops separately. Zen offers roof options when you order. Bjorn sells no sails, but its kit has brackets to mount one.
None of the three states a total for all this. For what the extras run, read what a pergola kit price leaves out. For why bracket kits sit outside every price-per-square-foot figure on this site, see the bracket tier of the kit guide.
What you still have to buy
Each brand’s pages say what its base kit contains. The table sets those statements side by side for a single four-post kit in 4×4 lumber: Toja’s Any Size Pergola Kit, Bjorn’s Pergola Bracket Kit and Zen’s Basic Pergola Frame Kit.
| Toja Grid | Bjorn Woodworks | Zen Pergolas | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brackets in the box | 4 SOLO base brackets and 4 TRIO corner brackets | 4 boots, 4 shoulders and 4 shade sail brackets | The brackets for the kit you pick; a frame-only kit has no roof brackets |
| Screws or bolts | Stainless screws with caps, enough for 2 holes per bracket side; extras sold separately | Lag bolts, per the kit page | Stainless self-tapping screws |
| Anchoring hardware | Not included | Kit page says concrete anchors are included; the instruction sheet says not (see below) | Not included |
| Lumber | Not included | Not included | Not included |
| Roof or shade | Sold separately: shade sails and other tops, or rafter brackets | No sails sold; the kit has brackets to mount one | Optional slat-roof brackets, canopies and a polycarbonate roof, chosen when you order |
| Tools the brand lists | Ladders, drills, measuring tape, cardboard | Drill and socket bit, level, ladder, tarp and three people | Not listed on the pages read; the FAQ says most jobs need 4 people |

- 1-1/2" Pan Rob/Phil combo drive 304 S.S wood screws with black plastic head caps
Not included
- Lumber — the buyer supplies all wood: "Why is lumber NOT included? ... shipping wood is extremely expensive and most populations will have access to local stores that sell wood." (FAQ)
- Anchoring hardware — "Remember, anchoring hardware is NOT included as surfaces will vary from build to build." (build guide / FAQ)
- Additional screws and head caps beyond 2 screws per bracket side — "extra screws and caps are available for purchase." (FAQ / Structure Kits)

Zen says a kit may or may not include a roof, privacy walls, side railings or corner supports. It leaves out anchors, because the right ones depend on your surface and local codes.
Watch out: Bjorn’s kit page lists “Matching Black Lag Bolts and Concrete anchors” in the box, but its instruction sheet says the ground bolts and adapters are “(not included in kit)”. We cannot tell which is current, so ask Bjorn before you order and get the answer in writing.
Steel, finish and where it is made
All three state a steel gauge. Gauge is the thickness of the sheet, so a lower number means thicker steel. None of them gives a rust test.
Toja says it uses 12 or 14 gauge North American steel, depending on the bracket, with an outdoor weather coating, and that the brackets are made in Canada. Bjorn lists 12 gauge carbon steel with a flat black powder coat. It calls itself USA designed and does not say plainly where the brackets are fabricated. Zen says 14 gauge steel with a weather coating, made by Zen and shipped from Boise, Idaho.
Lumber: what fits and how long it can run
All three build around 4×4 and 6×6 lumber, which measures 3.5 and 5.5 inches, not four and six. Buy it before you plan the cuts. Toja’s build guide tells you to take a bracket to the store to check the fit.
Toja’s FAQ warns that pressure-treated wood holds moisture and “can take a significant amount of time to dry out completely”. The span and post guidance below is each brand’s own. Your building department or an engineer decides what your site needs, not these brands and not us.
| Toja Grid | Bjorn Woodworks | Zen Pergolas | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lumber the brackets fit | Dressed 4×4 and 6×6; the cavities measure 3.61 and 5.62 inches | 4×4 or 6×6 at 3.5 and 5.5 inches; a 6×6 rough-cut option is listed on the kit page | Dressed 4×4, 2×4, 6×6 and 2×6 |
| Wood it suggests | Any completely dry, straight lumber | Pressure-treated or cedar; Douglas fir if sealed | Western red cedar or redwood; pressure-treated pine; dry, straight lumber |
| Longest run it recommends | 12 ft of lumber for any single pergola section | 12×12 sections | Beams no longer than 12 ft per section |
| Post length | Its FAQ and its diagrams differ (see below) | Sections up to 9 ft tall | 8 ft recommended; never over 10 ft; corner supports above 8 ft |
Sources: Toja FAQ and build guide; Bjorn kit page, home page and sizing post; Zen FAQ. Bjorn’s extender page says it accommodates 4×4 lumber, while its first line names 4×4 and 6×6.
Watch out: Toja’s FAQ says it does not recommend “8 ft. lumber for your vertical posts” unless the product page notes an exception. Its own diagrams on the kit pages mark a recommended post length of 8 ft. Check the product page for your kit before you buy posts.
Sizes, shapes and how far each system stretches
Bracket kits have no fixed footprint: you cut the lumber. The limit is the longest run each brand recommends, then how it lets you add sections. Toja’s wall-mount, angled, hexagonal and Grid 30 kits are below, at list price with “made to order” in place of a size.
| Claim | As published | Source | What it does not cover |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bjorn: size and expansion | “We recommend 12x12 sections up to 9ft tall”; extender kits and 5-way brackets add sections. One extender kit is added for each further 12 ft. | Bjorn Woodworks kit page and sizing postRead Oct 9, 2026 | Bjorn also sells lean-to and gazebo kits, which this page does not compare. |
| Zen: size and range | Kits are sold in blocks: 1 block up to 12×12 ft, 2 blocks up to 24×12, 3 blocks up to 36×12, 4 blocks up to 24×24. The kit collection returned about 70 kit pages on 9 Oct 2026. | Zen Pergolas home page and kit collectionRead Oct 9, 2026 | A block is a size cap, not a dimension. The price changes with kit type, bracket size, block count and roof option. |

Permits, engineering and who decides
Ask your building department before you order whether you need a permit and what anchoring it accepts. The permit section of the cost guide shows where to start.
Toja’s Structure Kits page says its roofed-structure details come with an engineer-stamped load document, that the loads cover freestanding structures only, and that you may need a building permit. Foundations are for “your own engineer”. Check what its linked PDFs cover before you rely on them.
Bjorn and Zen state nothing equivalent on the pages listed in Sources. Zen says it cannot advise on mounting to the ground or a house and tells you to check local building codes.
Which one?
- Buy Toja Grid if…
- You want a brand that says it publishes an engineering document for adding a roof, kits in hexagonal, angled and peaked shapes, and a range you can browse here with the box contents listed. Budget for your own anchors.
- Buy Bjorn Woodworks if…
- You want the longest bracket warranty any of the three states, and a kit page that lists anchors and bolts in the box. Confirm the anchors with Bjorn first, because its instruction sheet says otherwise.
- Buy Zen Pergolas if…
- You want to set the type, bracket size, block count and roof in one order form. Zen allows returns for 30 days, less shipping both ways and a 15% restocking fee.
Questions
Is a bracket kit cheaper than a pergola kit?
Not always: a bracket kit is connectors only. Add posts and beams, anchors and any roof or shade before you compare it with a boxed kit. None of the three brands states a total. See what a pergola kit price leaves out.
Which lumber fits Toja, Bjorn and Zen brackets?
4×4 or 6×6 lumber, which measures 3.5 and 5.5 inches, fits all three. Toja’s build guide gives bracket cavities of 3.61 and 5.62 inches and says the wood must be dry and straight. Bjorn also lists a 6×6 rough-cut option.
Are Toja Grid brackets made in the USA?
No: Toja says “Made in Canada”. Its shipping policy says orders ship from a Canadian warehouse, while its product page banner says “Shipping from the US!”. The pages disagree, so ask Toja where your order ships from.
Do I need a permit for a bracket-kit pergola?
Possibly, and your building department decides. Toja’s Structure Kits page says you may need a permit and to contact your building department. See the permit section of the cost guide.
